The Need for Help in Ukraine

As so many Ukrainians have been forced from their homes and their communities, we want to inspire hope for a better future and connection to a new community, starting with a comfortable home.
Families don’t have sanitary systems like toilets, showers, and hot water, or need safe cooking appliances and other basic improvements.
Ukraine Relief Effort Arcadia is raising funds to conduct rehabilitation projects that make huge differences in the lives of Ukrainian families. For a few thousand dollars, we can greatly improve living conditions for families and return some normalcy for their lives.
Our efforts fund a team stationed in Ukraine working with local governments, contractors, homeowners, and the Internal Displacement (IDP) families to carry out life changing projects. Not only do the funds raised improve the living conditions for the displaced families but they also create quality construction jobs, aiding economic development regionally . We ensure that our overhead costs are low so that over 90% of dollars donated go to materials and contractor services. We also balance cost with value, and manage the projects directly to ensure results that meet all of our humanitarian goals.
Below are some samples of recent projects that have been completed.
Housing Projects Helping Families in Need
Hospital
The Kopychyntsi Central District Hospital is a 150-bed public hospital that was founded in 1903. It provides a wide range of medical services, including general surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology. The hospital is staffed by a team of experienced doctors and nurses and provides care to about 60,000 people.
Unfortunately, the 120-year-old hospital lacks many of the modern pieces of equipment we take for granted in the United States. We are raising funds to provide much-needed medical equipment and basic supplies for the hospital. We are focusing directly on improving the infant and childcare services in the hospital along with the surgery and trauma supplies and equipment.
About Kopychyntsi
- Kopychyntsi is located in western Ukraine near the border with Poland and sits about 465 kilometers (290 miles) from Kyiv, the capital.
- The front lines of the war are currently about 475 kilometers (300 miles) from Kopychyntsi so it is a safe and stable community. However, the war is fluid, and the front lines change often, leading to new influxes of displaced families.
- Kopychyntsi is a historic town with a rich cultural heritage in the Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine.
- It has a population of about 6,500 people and an addition of more than 500 internal displacement families.
- The town was founded in the 14th century, originally serving as a major center of trade and commerce.
How the War in Ukraine Has Affected Kopychyntsi
Like every town in Ukraine, Kopychyntsi residents have lost their lives or loved ones fighting in the war. But also, Kopychyntsi has received thousands of displaced and injured persons from other parts of the country, increasing the need for a local hospital that can meet the growing demands of this small community.
How You Can Help

- housing projects to provide safe and sanitary living conditions for displaced families; or
- medical equipment and supplies that are needed in Kopychyntsi.
Even a small donation can make a big difference for Ukrainians affected by the war. Materials and appliances can cost as little as half of US prices and labor intensive work can be lower. We also use good quality used appliances, and work with the contractors and local material suppliers to get good deals on materials.
There are many ways you can help Ukraine Relief Effort Arcadia:
- A full plumbing system with septic tank, municipal water hookup, piping, a water heater, toilet, shower, kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and washing machine hookup can be less than $4,000.
- Converting an unused room into a bathroom or kitchen, not including plumbing, can be $1,500.
- An energy efficient single room Ukrainian made electric convector heater is about $100.
- A new lockable front door is about $450.
- Insulating windows are about $250 per piece with installation.
- Food preparation and storage furniture and appliances like cabinets, counters, and refrigerator can be under $400.
- Replacing the sheet metal on an otherwise good home’s roof was $4,500, including labor.
Here are some specific examples of how donations have been used to help the hospital in Kopychyntsi:
- A donation of $500 was used to purchase a new generator for the hospital. This generator will provide backup power in case of a power outage, which is a common occurrence in the region during winter.
- A donation of $1,000 was used to purchase medical supplies, including bandages, gloves, and medications. These supplies are essential for the hospital to provide care to the people of Kopychyntsi.
- $7,000 purchased a new defibrillator from Italy that matches Ukraine’s power supply, has a Ukrainian language option, and has available replacement parts and wear items.
